Internship Cover Letter for Students: Example and Template

An internship letter should identify your course, the placement you seek, your confirmed availability and a relevant project. A personal application letter is different from the official university letter an employer may request.

The example below is fictional and instructional. Replace every placeholder with your facts and remove any experience or skill you do not have. Its tasks are not a real customer's results.

[Name] | [Email] | [Phone]

[Date]

Dear [Hiring team],

I am a [year] student in [degree] at [university], applying for the [internship title / reference]. I am available from [confirmed start] to [confirmed end], subject to [actual university conditions].

In a course project, I built a simple help-desk request form and documented how a request moves to a support team. I tested required fields with classmates and revised the form after their feedback. I would like to develop these skills through supervised work in your [relevant department].

Your placement's focus on [specific task from the advert] connects to that project. I have attached my CV and can provide [the required university documentation, if applicable] through your application process.

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome an opportunity to discuss the placement and the university requirements.

Kind regards,

[Name]

Separate your motivation from the university's authorisation

  • Confirm dates before using the sample. Do not promise full-time attendance if classes or another placement conflict.
  • For a Saudi cooperative placement, check the programme's official letter requirements. Your own cover letter cannot certify the university's approval.
  • For a UAE summer placement, identify the actual opening and your attendance availability instead of assuming every internship is a degree requirement.
  • The example is for manual editing. It does not open a cover-letter generator or claim that ArcPixel can prepare official university documents.

How to structure an internship cover letter

ParagraphWhat it should do
OpeningName the internship, your course and year, and your confirmed dates
EvidenceOne course project, society role or part-time job, with what you did yourself
FitOne specific reason you want this organisation's placement, not any placement
CloseYour availability for an interview and any document the employer asked for

Internship cover letter with no experience

Most internship applicants have no work history, and employers expect that. Coursework, a group project, volunteering or a part-time job can carry the evidence paragraph if you describe what you did and what it taught you. The version below is fictional; replace every bracket with your own facts.

Fictional no-experience evidence paragraph

In my [course] module, I worked in a team of [number] to [project task]. I was responsible for [your part], using [tool or method]. It taught me [specific skill], which your [internship title] lists as part of the role.

Outside my course, I work [hours] a week at [part-time job], where I [task that shows reliability or communication].

Why the example is written this way

The letter provides a specific learning connection and practical dates. It does not ask the employer to infer whether the applicant is a current student, a graduate or available for the whole placement.

Before applying

Questions

Do I need both a university authorisation letter and my own cover letter?
Check what the employer's application actually asks for. A university authorisation letter confirms your placement is approved; your own cover letter explains why you want that specific internship. They serve different purposes and one doesn't replace the other.
What if I haven't confirmed my placement dates yet?
State your expected availability honestly rather than leaving it out or guessing a firm date. Update the letter once your dates are confirmed, before you actually send the application.
Can I use the same letter for every internship I apply to?
The structure can repeat, but the specific task or project you connect to the role should change per employer. A letter that names no real detail about the internship reads as a template, not an application.

Next step

Send the letter with a CV built for the same placement: the student internship CV guide shows the structure, and the first-job cover letter guide covers applications after graduation. Use the UAE guide or Saudi guide for country-specific checks. Use the resume builder to organise your information. Building and previewing are free; PDF export requires a paid plan. See pricing.
