For most jobs in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the best CV template is a single-column layout with standard headings, selectable text and contact details in the main body. It is the safest choice for the applicant tracking systems behind company portals and job boards, and quick for recruiters to scan. Use a photo-friendly sidebar design only when you email a CV directly and the employer expects a photo.
In the Gulf, employers and job boards almost always say CV rather than resume, so a search for a Dubai CV template and a search for a resume template are usually the same request. What changes is how you apply. A CV uploaded to a company portal, Bayt or LinkedIn is usually read by software before a person sees it. A CV emailed to a recruiter in Dubai or handed over at a Riyadh career fair is read by a person first. The template should suit the route, not the other way round.
Which CV template to use, by situation
| Your situation | Template to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Applying through a company careers portal, Bayt, Naukrigulf or LinkedIn | Classic single-column | Your file is likely parsed by software; one reading order removes the risk of mixed-up columns |
| Emailing your CV to a recruiter or agency in Dubai or Abu Dhabi | Single-column, or a tidy sidebar design | A person opens it first, but agencies often upload it to their own system afterwards |
| Government, semi-government or large employer programmes in Saudi Arabia | Single-column, education dates easy to find | Programmes such as university internships ask for specific documents; the CV should match them without clutter |
| Fresh graduate or cooperative training (تدريب تعاوني) | Single-column, education first | Your degree, training dates and projects are the strongest evidence you have |
| Senior or executive role | Single-column with a short leadership summary, up to two pages | Scope, team size and results matter more than design |
| Creative role (design, architecture, media) | Clean CV plus a portfolio link | Show visual work in a portfolio; keep the CV itself easy to read |
Recruiters skim. Ladders' 2018 eye-tracking study, reported by HR Dive, found an average first look of about 7.4 seconds, and the layouts that held attention had clear headings and simple structure. Multiple columns and cluttered pages did worse. That is a study of English-language resumes rather than of Gulf recruiters specifically, but the logic applies anywhere a person is screening many CVs.
What makes a CV template ATS-friendly
- One column, or a sidebar that only holds short items such as languages, so the reading order stays obvious.
- Standard section names: Profile, Experience, Education, Skills, Languages, Certifications.
- Your name, phone and email in the body of the page, not only in a header, footer or image.
- Real text throughout. No skill bars, star ratings or text inside icons and graphics.
- Dates in one consistent format, for example 03/2023 – 08/2025, aligned so they can be scanned.
No template can guarantee a result in every applicant tracking system, and nobody outside the employer knows which system it uses. The practical test is simple: export the PDF, select all the text, paste it into a plain-text editor and read it top to bottom. If your email is missing or two sections are interleaved, change the template before you apply. The ATS template guide shows the test step by step.
Photo, nationality and visa status on a Gulf CV
| Detail | Common practice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | Often seen on UAE and Saudi CVs, but not a general requirement | Add a professional photo only when the advert or employer asks for one. Use a photo-friendly template so it does not push your experience down |
| Nationality | Frequently included because some roles have eligibility rules | Include it if it helps a recruiter check eligibility; otherwise the application form usually asks for it |
| Visa status and availability (UAE) | Many applicants already in the UAE state their visa type and notice period | One short line such as 'Employment visa, available with one month's notice' is enough |
| Date of birth, marital status, religion | Appear on older templates | Leave them out unless the employer specifically requests them |
| Passport or Iqama number | Sometimes requested later in hiring | Never put ID numbers on a CV you upload or email widely |
The American University of Sharjah resume checklist advises leaving out several personal details, which shows that a long personal section is not a Gulf requirement. For country-specific layouts, see the UAE CV format and the Saudi Arabia CV format guides.
Arabic, English or both?
Follow the language of the job advert. Most private-sector adverts in the UAE are in English. In Saudi Arabia you will see both, and some government and Saudization-focused roles are advertised in Arabic. If you need both versions, make two separate files from the same content instead of mixing two languages on one page: a mixed page is harder to scan and harder for software to read. Check that the Arabic version flows right to left and that numbers and dates still display correctly. The Arabic and English CV guide covers the details.

- Which CV format is best for UAE jobs?
- A reverse-chronological, single-column CV with a short profile, experience, education, skills and languages. There is no official UAE CV format; follow the advert, and keep the layout simple when you apply through a portal.
- Is a two-column CV acceptable in Dubai?
- Yes, when a person reads it first, such as a CV emailed to a recruiter. For portals and job boards, a single-column template is the safer choice because it keeps one reading order.
- Do I need a photo on my CV in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?
- It is common but not a general requirement. Add one when the employer asks or when local practice in your field expects it, and use a template designed for a photo.
- Should my Saudi CV be in Arabic or English?
- Use the language of the job advert. If you need both, make two separate files from the same content rather than one mixed page.
- Where can I get a free ATS-friendly CV template in Word?
- Microsoft Word and Google Docs both include free templates; choose a single-column one without text boxes. Whatever you use, export a PDF and run the copy-paste test before applying.
- What is an ATS-friendly CV format?
- A layout that software can read in the right order: one column, standard headings, real text and contact details in the body. It describes the structure, not a particular design or colour.
