Every customer service cover letter says the applicant is patient and good with people. Managers skip those lines. What they look for is a real situation: a difficult customer, the channel it came through, what you did and how it ended. One honest example is more convincing than a paragraph of adjectives.
The letters below are fictional. Replace every [bracketed] company, tool and number with your own.
Customer service cover letter (fictional)
Dear [Name or Hiring Team],
I am applying for the [Customer Service Representative] role at [Company]. I have [number] years handling [phone / chat / email] support for [type of customers] in [tool, e.g. Zendesk].
One example: a customer called about [problem] after [previous attempts]. I [what you did], followed up by [channel] the same day, and [outcome].

Retail, hospitality, tutoring and volunteering all involve customers. Pick the situation closest to a support call and describe it the same way.
First customer service job (fictional)
Dear [Hiring Team],
I am applying for the [Customer Service Trainee] role. For [duration] I worked [weekends] at [shop or café], where I handled returns and complaints at the counter.
When [situation], I [what you did] and [outcome]. I would like to bring that to phone and chat support, and I am comfortable learning new systems quickly.

What skills should a customer service cover letter mention?
Communication, problem solving and the tools you have used, each shown through one example rather than listed.
Should I mention call metrics?
If you tracked them and can explain them, yes: calls per day, quality scores or resolution rates. Do not invent figures.
