The most-starred open-source portfolio website repos on GitHub are academicpages (17.7k stars, MIT), al-folio (16.2k, MIT) and developerFolio (6.6k, GPL-3.0). For a more creative design, playground-macos, vscode-portfolio and ladunjexa's 3D portfolio are MIT-licensed and free to reuse. Check the license first: five of the fifteen repos below have none, so you can study them but not reuse them.
How we checked: on 5 October 2026 we opened each repository on GitHub and recorded its stars, license file, last update and stack. Ten of them come from a February 2025 DEV Community roundup whose entries link to a template directory rather than to GitHub, so we traced each one back to its source repo. The other five are the most-starred portfolio repos that GitHub search surfaces. Star counts change daily.

What is the best portfolio website GitHub repo?
- For an academic or research portfolio, use academicpages or al-folio. Both run on GitHub Pages with Markdown, are MIT-licensed and are still updated.
- For a developer portfolio with the least setup, use gitprofile. It builds the site from your GitHub username and pinned repositories.
- For a classic developer portfolio you configure in one file, use developerFolio, and note that its GPL-3.0 license applies to the code you change.
- For a portfolio that people remember, try playground-macos (a macOS desktop), vscode-portfolio (an editor theme) or ladunjexa's Three.js 3D portfolio. All three are MIT.
- For a Nuxt project, developer-portfolio-v2 is the MIT option in this list.
Treat the repos marked "study only" as inspiration. Several are personal sites published so others can learn from them, not templates offered for reuse.
Check the license before you fork a portfolio repo
A public repository is not automatically free to reuse. When a repo has no license file, the author keeps exclusive copyright: GitHub's terms let you view and fork it, but not copy it onto your own site. MIT lets you reuse and change the code as long as you keep the copyright notice. GPL-3.0 lets you reuse it, but code you distribute must stay under GPL. Creative Commons BY-NC requires credit and rules out commercial use, so ask the author first if your portfolio advertises paid work. This is a practical summary, not legal advice.
How to deploy a portfolio website from a GitHub repo
- Fork the repo, or click "Use this template" if the author enabled it, so your copy starts with a clean history.
- Replace the content in the config or data files: name, bio, projects, links and images. Most repos keep these in one file or a content folder.
- Run it locally with the commands in the README, usually npm install and npm run dev, and fix anything that breaks on your machine.
- Deploy for free. Jekyll repos such as academicpages and al-folio publish straight to GitHub Pages; React, Next.js and Nuxt repos deploy to GitHub Pages as a static export, or to a static host connected to your repository.
- Point your own domain at the site if you have one, then test it on a phone.
GitHub portfolio repo or a portfolio builder?
| GitHub repo | Portfolio builder such as ArcPixel | |
|---|---|---|
| Coding needed | Yes: edit code or config, run it locally | No: guided fields and a live preview |
| Hosting cost | Free on GitHub Pages or a free static host | ArcPixel: build and preview free; publishing needs a paid plan |
| Design freedom | Total, if you can code it | Choose from ready designs |
| Updates | Edit files and redeploy | Edit in the browser and publish |
| Best for | Developers who want to show they can build | Anyone who wants a finished portfolio quickly |
If you write code for a living, a portfolio you built and deployed is itself evidence of your skills, so a repo is a good choice. If you are a designer, student or career changer and want the time spent on your projects rather than on configuration, the ArcPixel AI portfolio builder turns your resume into a portfolio you can edit and publish.
- Can I use any portfolio template on GitHub for free?
- Only if its license allows it. MIT and similar licenses let you reuse the code with the copyright notice kept. A repo without a license file stays under the author's exclusive copyright, so you can study it but not reuse it.
- How do I host a portfolio on GitHub for free?
- Use GitHub Pages. Push the site to a repository, turn on Pages in the repository settings and choose the branch or build to publish. Jekyll templates such as academicpages work there directly.
- Do I need to credit the original author?
- With MIT, keep the license and copyright notice in your copy of the code. Creative Commons BY licenses also require visible credit. A short credit in the footer is good practice either way.
- Which GitHub portfolio template is best for beginners?
- gitprofile needs the least setup because it reads your GitHub profile, and academicpages runs on GitHub Pages without a build step. Both are MIT-licensed.
Next steps: compare hosted options in best portfolio builders, plan what to show in a portfolio without work experience, and read what a portfolio builder is before you choose.
