Resume examples

How should an English professor's resume or academic CV be organized?

An English professor resume and academic CV built around teaching, research, publications and service, with versions for adjunct and tenure-track roles.

Hiring committees for English faculty read an academic CV, not a one-page resume. They look for teaching experience by course and level, research and publications, and service to the department. For community colleges and teaching-focused roles, teaching evidence weighs more than publications.

Every example on this page is fictional. Replace each [bracketed] detail with your own, and never list a degree, publication or result you cannot back up.

Teaching statement summary for the CV

Many applications ask for a separate teaching statement. On the CV, a two-line teaching profile helps teaching-focused colleges: courses you can teach, modalities (in person, online), and one piece of evidence such as improved pass rates or a redesigned course.

Is a professor's resume different from a CV?

Yes. Academic jobs expect a full CV with teaching, publications and service; length is not limited to one page.

What if I have no publications yet?

Highlight teaching, conference papers, the dissertation and work in progress clearly labelled.

Should adjuncts list every section taught?

Group them by course and give the total number of sections.

Do I include course evaluations?

Yes, as an average score or short summary if they are strong.
