How to Make a Resume Fast: A First Draft in 15 Minutes

To make a resume fast, pick one single-column template and do not change it, then fill six sections in order: contact line, recent jobs, three bullets per job, education, grouped skills and a final check. Skip the summary, colours and optional sections on the first draft. With your dates and job titles ready, a usable draft takes about 15 minutes.

Most of the time people spend on a resume goes on decisions, not typing: which template, which font, whether to add a summary, how long it should be. The quick method removes those decisions. You use a known-good layout, fill only the required sections and leave polishing for later.

Before you start: gather these

  • Job titles, employers and start and end months for your last two or three roles.
  • Your degree or highest qualification, the institution and the year.
  • Eight to twelve skills or tools you have used at work or on projects.
  • One or two results per job you can describe, with numbers if you have them.

Can you make a resume in 2 minutes?

You can fill in the structure of a resume in a couple of minutes if every fact is ready and you type quickly. Writing bullets that describe what you achieved takes longer, and that is the part recruiters read. A realistic target for a first draft you would send is 10 to 20 minutes. Anyone promising a finished resume in two minutes is usually counting only the typing.

What to skip on the first draft

  • The summary. Add it later, once you know which roles you are applying for.
  • Hobbies, volunteering and languages, unless the job asks for them.
  • Colour and font changes. The template default is fine.
  • Reordering sections. The standard order works for most resumes.
  • Trying the same content in three different templates.

Write resume bullets fast

Bullets are the slowest part. Use one formula and fill in the brackets:

Bullet formula

[Action verb] [what you did] for [who or what], [scale], resulting in [outcome, with a number if you have one].

Fictional examples (replace with your own facts)

• Handled [number] customer calls a day for [product], keeping resolution within [target time].

• Rebuilt the [team]'s weekly report in [tool], cutting preparation time from [before] to [after].

• Trained [number] new staff on [process] during [busy period].

If you cannot remember a number, write the bullet without one and move on. A specific verb and a clear task beat an invented figure, and an interviewer may ask where a number came from.

When to spend more time

  • The job is a top priority. Spend 20 extra minutes matching the posting's wording.
  • You are a designer or front-end developer, where the resume itself is judged as work.
  • You are changing careers and need to explain how your experience transfers.
  • You are applying for senior roles, where the scope of your past work needs careful description.

No. A summary is optional. Leave it out of the first draft and add two specific lines later if they help for a particular role.

A single draft is fine for similar roles. For jobs you care most about, adjust the bullets and skills to use the posting's wording.

A text-based PDF unless the employer asks for Word. Open the file and check you can select the text before sending it.
