The best free resume builders in 2026 are Reactive Resume (free and open source), FlowCV (one resume with unlimited free PDF downloads), Teal (unlimited resumes and free PDF export, limited AI), Resume.com and Google Docs. Zety, Resume.io and Resume Now let you build for free, but their free download is a plain-text TXT file, not a formatted PDF.
"Free" means three different things on resume builder websites: free to build, free to download a formatted PDF, or free forever with no paid tier. Most confusion comes from the gap between the first two. You can spend an hour on a resume and only discover at the download button that the free version is plain text.
How we checked: ArcPixel publishes this comparison, and ArcPixel is one of the builders in it. We read each provider's own pricing or product page on 1 October 2026 and recorded what the free plan states. We did not buy paid plans. Some providers show prices in your local currency, so where we could not see a USD price we describe the plan instead. Terms change; recheck the provider's page before you enter a card.

What is the best free resume builder (or CV maker)?
- Want it free with no upsell at all? Use Reactive Resume. It is open source and has no paid tier.
- Need one clean, designed resume as a PDF? Use FlowCV. The free plan allows one resume with unlimited downloads and no watermark.
- Sending many tailored versions? Use Teal. Free accounts get unlimited resumes; the AI credits run out quickly, so write most bullets yourself.
- Applying mostly through Indeed? Resume.com is Indeed's own free builder.
- Want full control and already have a Gmail address? Start from a Google Docs resume template.
- Applying for a visual role? Canva gives you the most design freedom. Check that the text still reads in the right order (see the Canva section below).
- Student or recent graduate? Apply for Kickresume's free student Premium, or use FlowCV.
- Want an AI-written first draft? Rezi's free plan includes its AI writer, but only 3 PDF downloads, so finish editing before you export.
Is there a 100% free resume builder?
Yes. Reactive Resume, Google Docs and Resume.com let you build a resume and download it as a PDF without paying, and none of them asks for a card to download. FlowCV and Teal also give you a free PDF but cap something else: FlowCV allows one resume, and Teal limits templates and AI credits. A free account is still needed for most of them.
Which free resume builder has the best templates?
For free resume templates you can actually download, FlowCV is the strongest: its free plan includes all of its templates with unlimited PDF downloads for one resume. Canva has a large free template library, but some fonts and graphics are Pro, and its multi-column designs need the reading-order check below. Teal's free plan gives you 10 templates, Kickresume 4 basic ones, and Google Docs a small gallery you lay out yourself. Zety, Resume.io and Resume Now let you try every template, but the free download is TXT, which drops the design.
| Resume builder template | Free templates | Free PDF of that template? |
|---|---|---|
| FlowCV | All templates | Yes, one resume |
| Canva | Large library; some Pro elements | Yes |
| Teal | 10 templates | Yes |
| Kickresume | 4 basic templates | Yes |
| Google Docs | Small gallery | Yes |
| Zety, Resume.io, Resume Now | Full library to try | No, TXT only |
| ArcPixel | 16 resume templates to edit and preview | No, paid plan |
Free to build is not free to download
Zety, Resume.io and Resume Now all say on their own pages that the free download is TXT. A TXT file is plain text with no fonts, columns or spacing. It is useful for pasting into an online application form, but it is not the formatted resume you would attach to an email. Getting a PDF or Word file means starting a paid trial.
Those trials renew automatically. Zety's Pro trial lasts 14 days and then renews every four weeks. Resume.io's FAQ says a 7-day trial becomes a monthly membership if you do not cancel. If you start one, put a reminder in your calendar a day before it ends. If you only need one or two PDFs, a builder from the free-PDF rows above will save you the trial.
Is Canva free for resumes, and is it ATS-friendly?
Canva's resume templates are free with a Canva account, and you can export a PDF without paying. Some fonts, graphics and features such as Brand Kit are Pro. Canva's resume page focuses on design and does not describe applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software many employers use to read resumes. Multi-column layouts, icons and text placed inside shapes can come out in the wrong order when that software reads the file.
A quick test works for any builder: open your exported PDF, select all the text, and paste it into a plain text editor. If your name, job titles and dates appear in a sensible order, a parser can probably read it. The ATS resume guide explains the format in more detail.
Can ChatGPT or Claude make a resume for free?
Free versions of AI chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can draft and rewrite resume text from your notes. They cannot know your real dates, employers or results, and they sometimes add numbers you never gave them. Use them for wording, then paste the text into Google Docs or a builder for the layout, and check every claim before you send it.
Fictional prompt you can adapt
I am applying for [job title] at [company]. Here are my notes: [paste your real duties, tools and results].
Rewrite them as 4 resume bullet points that start with an action verb.
Use only the facts in my notes. Do not add numbers, tools or results I did not give you.
Is there a resume builder with no sign-up?
Very few online builders work without an account, because the account is how they save your draft. Even Reactive Resume's hosted site sends you to a sign-in page when you open the builder. If you do not want any online account, use a resume template in LibreOffice Writer, which is free and works offline, or in Microsoft Word if you already have it. Developers can also self-host Reactive Resume on their own computer.
Best free resume builder for freshers and students
A fresher's resume is mostly education, projects, internships and skills, so you need a clean single-column layout more than a long template library. FlowCV and Google Docs both handle that for free. Kickresume offers free Premium to students and teachers who apply for it, which unlocks its larger template set. For the section order and a sample, see the resume format for freshers and the graduate CV with no experience example.
Where ArcPixel fits
ArcPixel is not a free PDF resume builder, and we would rather say so here than at the download button. The free workspace lets you create and preview unlimited resume drafts and use 20 AI credits without a card. Downloading a PDF needs Solo, which starts at $1.99 for 7 days and then renews at $19.99/month, or $14.99 for 30 days and then $199.99/year. See pricing for current terms.
ArcPixel makes sense if you also want a cover letter and a portfolio website built from the same details. If you only need one PDF resume today, the free options above will do the job.
Want one tool for both your resume and a portfolio? The best resume and portfolio builder comparison covers ArcPixel, Kickresume, VisualCV, Canva and Wix, and how to make a portfolio for a job shows what to put in it.
- Is Resume.com really free?
- Resume.com advertises 100% free downloads in PDF and plain text. It is Indeed's resume builder and uses an Indeed account. Its templates are basic, so check the layout of the exported PDF before you rely on it.
- Is Canva's resume maker free?
- Yes. Canva's resume templates and PDF export are free with a Canva account. Some fonts, graphics and Brand Kit are Pro features. Check that a multi-column design still reads in the right order before you apply online.
- Is Zety free?
- Zety is free to build with and to download as TXT. PDF and Word downloads need Zety Pro, which starts with a 14-day paid trial and then renews every four weeks unless you cancel.
- Is Resume.io free?
- Resume.io's free plan allows one resume and one cover letter, with downloads in TXT format only. PDF downloads and premium templates need a paid plan.
- Is FlowCV really free?
- Yes for one resume. FlowCV's free plan includes one resume and one cover letter, all templates and unlimited PDF downloads with no watermark. More resumes and AI features need Pro, $5/month billed yearly.
- Is Teal's resume builder free?
- Yes. Teal's free plan includes unlimited resumes, 10 templates and PDF export, with a small number of AI credits. Teal+ adds unlimited AI, keyword matching and templates from $13 per week.
- Do free resume builders add a watermark?
- FlowCV states that its free plan has no watermark or branding. For any other builder, export a test PDF before you write the full resume, because watermark rules are not always on the pricing page.
- Can a free resume builder get me hired?
- Yes. Employers judge what the resume says, not which tool made it. A free Google Docs resume with clear evidence and the right keywords for the job will do better than a paid template full of vague claims.
