How do you write a teacher cover letter for a specific school?

A teacher cover letter that connects your subject, level and classroom practice to one named vacancy without inventing experience.

A teacher cover letter has one job: connect a named vacancy to evidence the school can check. It is not a second resume and it is not a statement of enthusiasm. If the letter could be sent to any school without editing, it will not help you. The strongest letters name the post, the subject and the level in the first two lines, then spend the body on two or three specific things you have actually done.

The letter below is a fictional example. Replace every name, school, date and achievement with your own before you send anything, and do not claim a qualification or result you cannot evidence.

Before you write, settle four things

  • The exact post: job title, subject, year groups and any reference number in the advertisement.
  • Your headline match: the one qualification or experience that makes you a credible candidate for this specific post.
  • Two pieces of evidence: things you planned, taught or changed, with enough detail that the school could ask you about them at interview.
  • Your registration status: state it plainly, including if it is pending or being transferred from another jurisdiction.

Teacher cover letter example

Dear [named person, or the hiring panel if no name is given],

I am applying for the [exact post title] post at [school], advertised [where and when]. I am a [subject] teacher qualified to teach [year groups], and my registration with [authority] is [actual status].

In my current post at [school], I planned and taught [named unit or scheme] to [number] classes of around [class size]. I rebuilt the assessment for that unit after [specific problem you observed], and the department now uses [what changed].

I also [second specific example: an intervention, a club, a curriculum contribution, a support role], working with [role] and reporting to [role].

Your advertisement mentions [specific requirement from the advertisement]. I have done this by [how you have actually done it, or an honest statement of the closest experience you have].

I am available from [date] and would welcome the chance to discuss the post. My resume and references are attached.

Yours sincerely,

[Name] | [Phone] | [Email]

Close with availability, not with a plea

The final paragraph should give the school something practical: when you can start, whether you can attend an interview or teach a sample lesson, and how to reach you. Avoid closing lines that apologise for your experience or ask for a chance. If you are missing a stated requirement, say so once, plainly, and name the closest thing you have actually done rather than hoping the panel does not notice.

  • The school name, post title and any reference number are correct and appear early.
  • Registration or licence status is stated accurately, including pending applications.
  • Every claim in the letter is something you could be asked about at interview.
  • No pupil names or assessment records appear anywhere in the letter.
  • The letter is one page and does not repeat the resume line by line.
How long should a teacher cover letter be?

One page. Three to five short paragraphs is usually enough to name the post, give two pieces of evidence, address the main requirement and state your availability.

What if I do not know who to address it to?

Check the advertisement, the school website and the application pack first. If no name is given, address the hiring panel or the headteacher by role. Do not guess at a name.

Should I mention that I am changing key stage or curriculum?

Yes, briefly and honestly. Name the change, say what transfers, and give one concrete example of relevant preparation. A panel will find the gap anyway; it reads far better when you have addressed it yourself.
