A first nursing resume is not an empty resume. Clinical placements, supervised patient care, simulations, certifications, and work in other service roles all provide evidence. The job is to label that evidence accurately, place it where a recruiter expects it, and never present supervised training as paid employment.
The samples are fictional. Replace every credential, placement, date and skill with your verified information. Do not describe yourself as registered unless that is your actual current status for the relevant jurisdiction.
Start with the evidence you already have
- Clinical placements: name the setting, dates, patient group, and the care you performed under supervision.
- Licensure and certifications: show the exact credential, issuing body, and current status.
- Training: include relevant modules, simulations, capstone work, and evidence-based practice projects.
- Transferable work: customer service, care work, volunteering, and shift-based roles can demonstrate communication, reliability, and calm decision-making.
Entry-level nurse resume summary
[Name] | Nursing graduate — [actual registration status]
[City] | [Phone] | [Email]
Education: [qualification, institution and graduation date]
Clinical placement: [actual setting and dates]; [tasks personally completed under supervision]
Skills: [verified training and skills relevant to the vacancy]
Write placements like experience, but label them honestly
Put a Clinical Experience section above unrelated paid work when placements are your strongest evidence. Each entry should state that it was a placement, identify the ward or setting, and use two to four bullets describing actions you personally completed. Avoid unsupported claims such as improving patient outcomes unless you measured the result and are allowed to share it.
Clinical placement example
Medical-Surgical Clinical Placement — Regional Hospital — Jan to Mar 2026
Completed supervised observations and documented findings for an assigned patient group using the ward's approved process.
Prepared structured handovers and escalated changes to the supervising nurse promptly.
Supported mobility, hygiene, nutrition, and discharge education while following infection-prevention procedures.
Final check before you apply
- Match the role title and required credentials exactly where they are truthful.
- Keep registration numbers and sensitive patient information out of public examples.
- Use conventional headings and selectable text so the document is easy to scan and parse.
- Check every date, credential, and clinical statement against your records.
- Export the file, copy its text into a plain-text editor, and confirm the reading order still makes sense.
Should a new nurse put education before experience?
Usually place clinical experience first when it gives the strongest role-specific evidence, followed by education and credentials. A current student may put education first if the qualification is still in progress.
Can clinical placements count as work experience?
They count as relevant clinical experience, but should be clearly labeled as supervised placements rather than paid employment.
How long should an entry-level nurse resume be?
Use the space needed to show relevant evidence without repetition. For many first-role applicants, one focused page is enough; a second page is reasonable when substantial placements, prior care work, or required credentials need it.
For a Gulf application, check the UAE guide or Saudi guide. Confirm the vacancy and registration requirements directly with the employer and relevant authority. Do not include patient information in your CV or portfolio.
